Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is one of the most severe complications of diabetes mellitus, featuring difficult wound repair and heavy clinical diagnosis and treatment burden. In recent years, the concepts and methods for DFU treatment in traditional Chinese and western medicine have shown a trend of diversified development, and abundant clinical experience has been accumulated in diagnosis and treatment practice. From the perspectives of traditional Chinese and western medicine, this article systematically sorts out the etiology, pathogenesis and research progress in diagnosis and treatment of DFU. By reviewing the evolution of understanding and clinical practice of this disease in traditional Chinese and western medicine, it further discusses the characteristics of DFU treatment with traditional Chinese and western medicine in terms of theoretical basis, characteristic therapies and practical application, and prospects the development trend of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine and minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment for DFU, so as to provide references for clinical management of DFU.
