Objective To evaluate the role of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in the pathogenesis of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. Methods Serum MMP-9 and VEGF levels were determined in 20 patients with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy and 20 healthy pregnancy women by ELISA assay. Results Serum MMP-9 levels and VEGF were significantly lower in the patients with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy than those in healthy controls (P<0.05).Conclusion MMP-9 and VEGF levels may play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy
